Welcome to APA blogs. The first question I expect you all to be asking is "What could we possibly have to blog about?" Well let's start with who I am.
My name is Kenny, I went to school in Kirksville, MO (Truman State) and graduated in 2006. Thanks to a stroke of luck, and some very generous parents, I was able to buy a house my freshman year of college. You know how some people say they get the "ski bug?" Well I got the house bug. By an even bigger stroke of luck, I managed to get a once in a lifetime type of job straight out of high school, which let me buy more houses while I was still in college.
I learned two very fortuitous things while in college. The first one is, I can drink like a fish. A fact that has won me a bet or two (all good stories) in my post college days. The second is that it's a lot of work to manage properties. Answering random calls, trying to find tenants, collect rent, etc etc. It's something I would only recommend for an incredibly mature, patient, and dedicated college student (of which most aren't and I certainly wasn't).
As luck (there's that word again) would have it, I had to get some work done on a property and called virtually every contractor in town. Just as I was about to give up a gal picked up who turned out to be the three things that I wasn't: mature, patient, and dedicated. To put a little icing on the cake, she was just starting her own property management company and was looking for a client. That gal was Carol
In a former life, Carol was a newspaper gal. I can't begin to describe her properly, so I'll let some recent press she got do it for me here. For those of you who can do the math, I wasn't lying when I said she was "mature."
We hit it off, and before I left Kirksville, Carol was my Property Manager. My life got a whole lot easier and I started focusing on.... well let's just call it the "Monopoly" aspect of buying properties and she focused on the "Managing" aspect of owning properties. Yes, she got the harder job.
A lot has transpired since then, we've become partners on what became known as Action Properties Agency and we've hire a lot of great people. Tina, John, Dawn, and Caitlin thanks for all your work. Things are really humming along these days To the point that I felt comfortable moving to London and we started a new branch in South Bend Indiana (home of Notre Dame).
So, I still haven't answered the question I posed at the beginning of this post: "What do we possibly have to blog about?" Clearly, I'm not a great writer, so it's not just a chance to showcase my prowess.
I still have the real estate bug, but now I also have the property management bug. We have a very ambitious goal at APA is to grow a truly great company that has locations all across the globe (right now we're still focusing on the US). It's a tall order, and not a single one of us claims we have a clear vision of how it's going to work. I want a history of the issues we faced (and overcame). I want someone to be able to read this history and know exactly who we are and where we came from. But mostly, I want to use this as a sounding board to get input/advice from any of you who care to chime in on how we can be doing things better.
Cheers,
Kenny
